How to choose an AI car photo tool: 10 questions to ask before you pay
There are a lot of tools that promise studio backgrounds for car photos, and they are not all the same. The questions that separate the ones that make listings better from the ones that make them look fake.
Does the floor reflection look real?
This is where cheap tools fall down first. A car pasted onto a studio floor with no reflection looks like a sticker. A reflection that is too sharp, the wrong colour or pointing the wrong way looks worse. Look at the join between the tyres and the floor and at the shadow under the car. If the car appears to float, buyers will see it too.
What happens to the glass?
Windows are the hardest part. In the original photo the glass reflects the sky and shows the yard through it. A good tool clears the reflections and the view through the glass so the windows read as glass, not as cut-out pieces of the old background. Ask for a sample of a car with a big windscreen and look through it.
Does it keep the wheels, mirrors and roof bars?
Alloy wheel spokes, door mirrors, aerials, roof bars and spoilers are fine detail that lazy masking chops off or blurs. Send the tool a photo of a car with multi-spoke alloys and roof bars and check every spoke is still there.
Does it change the car?
Some tools smooth the paint, brighten the colour or quietly tidy up marks. That makes a nicer picture and a worse listing, because the buyer arrives and the car does not match. Check the before and after side by side: the scratches, chips and dents should be in exactly the same places. Carzbooth draws a hard line here and never touches the car itself, for reasons we set out in what the booth changes and never touches.
How does it handle plates?
Ask whether the tool blurs number plates, leaves them, or replaces them with a dealer plate, and whether you can choose. Different markets and marketplaces have different rules, and you want to apply one policy to every car. Our note on number plates covers the choice.
Does it cope with portrait and odd angles?
Phone photos are often upright, and real lots produce head-on, low and three-quarter shots that were never framed for a template. A tool that only works on a perfect landscape three-quarter will reject half of what your team shoots. Send it a portrait photo and see what comes back.
Can you choose and keep one booth?
The value of a studio background is consistency across the whole lot, so you need to pick one booth and apply it to every car. Check how many booths there are, whether you can set a default, and whether the same booth looks the same from different camera angles. On Enterprise plans Carzbooth offers a branded booth of your own.
How fast, and in what batch size?
A tool that takes a day per car is slower than a studio. Ask what the turnaround is, whether you can upload a batch at once and whether there are limits per month. Then compare that with how many cars you list in a week.
What does it cost per car, honestly?
Prices are quoted per month, per image, per vehicle or per seat, and the comparisons are deliberately hard. Work it back to a cost per car at your real monthly volume. Carzbooth publishes its plans per month with a number of cars included, so the per-car figure is on the pricing page. Our post on the cost of car photography shows how to compare it with a studio or in-house shooting.
Will it run a test on your cars?
Every tool looks good on its own demo photos. The only test that matters is on five of your cars, photographed by your team, on your lot, in your weather. Any serious supplier will run that for free. Carzbooth does: send three to five photos from the contact page and they come back in the booth.
Software that drops a car into a studio background has gone from novelty to normal in a few years, and there are now dozens of tools competing for a dealer's money. Most of them demonstrate well on their own sample photos. The test that matters is how they handle yours. These are the questions we would ask of any tool, including ours.
Look at the floor, the glass and the wheels. Check that the car is unchanged. Make it handle your real photos. Work out the cost per car. Then choose, pick one booth, and use it on everything.
